In the Passenger Seat

Caregivers often travel alongside the people they support — helping navigate daily life, anticipate challenges, and respond when the road gets rough. In the Passenger Seat is a space created to recognize that role, and to acknowledge that caregiving is not only about supporting someone else, but also about being supported yourself.

At Foothills Fetal Alcohol Society, we know that caregivers supporting individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) bring deep knowledge, commitment, and resilience to the journey. They are often adjusting routines, advocating within systems, and finding creative ways to meet needs that aren’t always well understood by the world around them.

This column is about walking alongside caregivers — offering insight, information, and encouragement that reflects real life. It will explore strategies that support individuals with FASD while also recognizing the importance of caregiver wellbeing, connection, and sustainability. Because strong support doesn’t come from doing everything alone.

In the Passenger Seat is a reminder that caregivers deserve understanding, resources, and space to reflect. When caregivers feel supported, informed, and valued, they are better able to continue the journey — not just for those they care for, but for themselves as well.
