Through the Windshield

When we talk about intervention and support, it’s easy to picture something reactive — stepping in only when things go wrong. Through the Windshield invites a different view: support as something that helps people see what’s ahead, anticipate challenges, and plan a path forward before obstacles become overwhelming.

At Foothills Fetal Alcohol Society, intervention isn’t about correction or control. It’s about clarity. It’s about helping individuals, families, and communities understand what’s coming next and putting supports in place that make the journey more manageable.

Looking through the windshield doesn’t mean ignoring what’s behind us. It means keeping our eyes forward while regularly checking the mirrors — using past experiences, lessons learned, and lived insight to inform what comes next. Effective intervention balances reflection with anticipation, helping people prepare for transitions, adjust expectations, and respond thoughtfully rather than reactively.

Support works best when it’s timely, flexible, and grounded in understanding. That might look like helping someone anticipate a change in routine, identify tools that support regulation, or plan for environments that may be challenging. It can also mean adjusting systems and expectations so they better fit the person — not the other way around.

This kind of forward-looking support recognizes that progress isn’t always a straight line. There may be detours, slowdowns, or moments when it’s necessary to pull over and reassess. Intervention doesn’t eliminate those realities, but it can help people navigate them with greater confidence and less stress.

Through the Windshield is about planning with intention. It’s about support that helps people see possibilities, understand options, and move forward with clearer direction. When intervention is rooted in respect, anticipation, and collaboration, it becomes less about fixing problems — and more about creating pathways that work in real life.
